Derek Grainger boxed as an amateur for Poplar ABC in the heart of the East End, where he boxed as a junior and senior boxer. He was a NABC runner up and a junior NE divisional winner, also boxing for London ABA and representing his country against East Germany and West Germany and selected to train as part of the 1988 Olympic squad heading for Seoul in Korea. Unfortunately he just received his full England honours to box against Poland and decided to turn professional with Terry Lawless at the Royal Oak Gym in Canning Town, London. Among his stable mates were Mark Kaylor, Chris Pyatt, Jimmy MacDonald, David Dent, Frank Bruno, Horace Notice, Gary Mason, Micheal Watson, Micky Hughes, Jimmy Peters, Errol MacDonald, and a host of other top professional boxers.
Frank Black and George Francis trained Derek through most of his career at The Royal Oak Gym with Terry Lawless managing his career up to a contract dispute. Derek then became self-managed and promoted by Frank Warren.
Frank Warren helped Derek put his career back on track and eventually promoting his British Title challenge against Del Bryan, who beat Derek in 7 rounds.
Derek continued for one more contest and then decided to retire at the age of 26, after having 26 professional contests losing 2 and drawing 1 and having a 19 KO/TKO/RSF wins and only 3 going the distance.
After a while away from boxing, Derek now has the appetite and has come back to train professional boxers. Derek works with Johnny Eames at the ULTRACHEM TKO GYM in the east end. Ultrachem TKO GYM have their own sport science and nutrition experts that can work with the professional boxers to give them the individual advice to get the most out of their careers.
